Every so often, I embark on a piece thinking I know a fair amount about the subject and their career, only to discover I had only scratched the surface. Having only heard the “hits” I was pleasantly surprised when I delved into Springsteen’s career and music catalog and quickly discovered a true poetic lyricist focused on the struggles of daily American life. I consider myself somewhat of the artist equivalent of a method actor – as I envelope myself with the subject’s music, literature, videos and documentaries for the period of time that I spend with them in front of a canvas. For this reason, the many hours I spent listening to his brand of heartland rock made this one of the most enjoyable and eye opening pieces I have done to date.
