A short while back I was asked if there are any subjects that are more fun to paint than others – the answer was an astounding yes and Marilyn Manson is exhibit A. Aside from the obvious make up, contact lenses and eccentric sense of style, Manson also has very unique and promising features. As mentioned on my Neil Young painting, I always find myself drawn to those whose music has something to say. Whether it’s social, religious, or political commentary and despite whether or not I agree with the issue, I’m always drawn to more cerebral style of lyrics and music. Manson may have chosen to do this in a different fashion than say, Young or Dylan, but his statement is undeniably as strong. I chose to portray his namesakes along with the American flag as a background as a reminder of the controversy this artist caused when he first broke onto the scene in the nineties. The mystery surrounding his band, the rumours that followed, coupled with the protests and banning in many cities drove my level of intrigue to astonishing heights and quickly became a lifelong fan.
