I have often stated the influence, bands such as The Doors, Stones, Zeppelin and Motley have had on my life and ultimately my artistic direction, but if you ask me who has been my favorite band of the last twenty years, the answer – hands down is Tool. Tool’s unique approach to not only their music style and sound, but also their handling of the entire music industry and insistence of privacy is awe inspiring. Their unification of musical experimentation and visual arts has propelled this style transcending band from an underground staple to a critically acclaimed commercial success and has awarded them three Grammy Awards along the way. For the background I chose to paint my interpretation of the “third eye” due to the bands frequent references of the third eye and personal evolution. I also felt some responsibility to try stay true to the bands commitment to surrealistic visual art from the likes of Alex Grey, Cam de Leon and the bands own Adam Jones that adorn their albums, posters and t-shirts.
