This piece isn’t necessarily a tribute to one jazz singer, its more of a tribute to a style, genre or vibe. The vibe that I was going for was probably best exemplified by legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.

The actual concept was birthed last September during a trip to Paris. We had just finished an excellent dinner in the St. Germain-des-Prés area and decided to stroll through the 6th arrondissement in search of a cool place to have a nightcap. We stumbled on an amazing jazz club called Chez Papa. Walking into this place was like walking into a time machine and being sent back to the type of mid-century jazz clubs we often see on the silver screen. It was an amazing find. The room and the accompanying band mesmerized us both. Through the flickering candlelight and the martinis, it was easy to get lost in the scene. You could almost convince yourself that one of those aforementioned jazz legends was singing a few feet in front of you.
