Although this is my first Elton John piece, I have often used him as an example of how I approach and research my subjects. As musicians age, they often transform their image and style – sometimes often as in the case of David Bowie. It is through my research that I try to find a persona that honestly reflects the artist as I know/remember him. I also tend to lean towards the more eccentric looks as they generally make for a more dramatic piece. As for Elton’s large catalog of hits, you’d be hard pressed to play an Elton song at a party and not find someone singing along to his infectious hooks. There were numerous songs and lyrics that could have been considered for the title, but I would always circle back to my personal favorite “Saturday’s Alright for Fighting”. Any lyric from this classic song would be sufficient but, “We had it with your discipline” seemed to speak more personally to my relationship with my art and the art business in general.
