"This piece is a major departure from the original concept. It started out as a Rogue series piece, focussing on the prevalence of sunglasses in rock music. I had planned on a piece depicting artists who have made sunglasses a part of their persona. Bono, Roy Orbison, John Lennon and Elton were all supposed to be a part of this piece, but as I started to conceptualize, Elton’s glasses overpowered the others…much like Elton himself, they completely stole the show. They simply demanded to have a piece all their own.

I started this project unaware of the upcoming biopic Rocketman, and once I saw the trailer and buzz around the movie, I took it as a sign that I was on the right track to focus solely on Elton.

Knowing a bit about Elton’s story, his reinvention of himself as well as his struggles as one of the first artists to be open about his sexuality, the title lyric of this piece from his hit song “Rocketman” was the easiest title choice I’ve ever had to make." -Stickman
